Dramatic generational differences

While perceptions and experiences of organizational culture may differ by level, group or location, they dramatically differ by age group. The Intergenerational Snapshot compares responses by four generational groups, explains the synergies and tensions in play between the generations and their implications. For people concerned about talent management, innovation and productivity, it provides a new lens for improved priority setting and planning.

Framework for dialogue and action planning

The primary purpose of the Intergenerational Snapshot is to provide a framework to build shared understanding of the way your organization’s culture is impacting the performance of different generations of employees and the consequences to future success. By assessing the culture from the perspective of each generational group, myths can be wiped away and causal factors identified for informed action planning.

From this understanding, priorities can be set and changes co-designed to fit the needs of each generational group. Groups can tap into the strengths of each of the generations for improved coaching and better meet each generation’s needs, all with the intent of achieving a breakthrough in performance results. The Intergenerational Snapshot can provide the data to help set priorities and plans for Talent Management strategies.

Importantly this Snapshot report can be used to engage people in meaningful conversations about the way practices and behaviors are impacting group and individual performance to develop genuine understanding between the generations.

What is the cultural lens of each generation?

The Intergenerational Snapshot report is usually, but not always, completed as a secondary report to a company-wide Culture Snapshot or Pulse report. The data from the item statements and responses to the open-ended questions are re-sorted by generational grouping (see definitions) and culture patterns interpreted through the lens of each group.

Intergenerational tensions are only one of several factors that influence expectations and perceptions of experience. Others such as position and authority level, behaviors of immediate managers, and geographic location can also have a significant impact on the culture assessment results which is why it is important to complete a full analysis of the culture as part of conducting intergenerational culture work.

"We're interested in intangibles - a spiritual infusion - because they are the hardest things for our competitors to replicate. The tangible things your competitors can go out and buy. But they can't buy your spirit. So it's the most powerful thing of all." Herb Kelleher, Cofounder and Chairman, Southwest Airlines
