Why Should Leaders Pay Attention To Culture?
Culture is often discounted as a soft and fuzzy HR concept that is tangentially linked to the performance of the organization. In reality, this is far from the truth. There are countless examples of behaviors and practices (observable manifestations of culture) that have a direct effect on top and bottom-line performance. For example, cost of culture, for example the amount of time, effort and frustration spent trying to acquire information in an organization that believes openness and transparency is a risk or the cost of blame fixing and finger pointing, rather than learning. Culture can support or cripple strategy implementation and goal achievement. Capitalizing on culture and shaping it for future success usually means the difference between adequate and great leadership.
When behaviors and practices are deeply embedded in the organization's way of working, for good reasons based on past success, they build unique organizational capabilities. Ford and Toyota for example have both built significant process diligence into their organizational DNA. Research also shows that strong cultures can limit responsiveness, ability to manage complexity and impact rate of organizational learning. A strong culture is thus a double-edged sword, providing both unique capabilities and creating risks, as Toyota has recently experienced. Good leaders understand the cultures and sub-cultures of their organizations and shape culture to fit strategy proactively over time. This program will provide key insights for leaders who want to create vibrant places to work that deliver results.
