Philanthropic organizations and not-for-profits are faced with many challenges that are significantly different from those of private and public sector organizations. For one, they often rely on outside funding from government agencies and private donors. As a result, they are subject to levels of scrutiny that go far beyond that experienced by other types of organizations. They also tend to rely on the services of volunteers who often outnumber employees. Because money is usually tight, employees are frequently paid less than their counterparts in the private and public sector and, as well, issues of sustainable decision-making are even more pressing. Given these unique dynamics, the Culture Check focuses on vocational aspects of work such as a strong sense of identity and purpose, that indicate that people are experiencing meaning from their work. It also explores consultation practices, sustainability as well as the extent that people believe that leaders are authentic.
