culturecheck: helping others

Philanthropic organizations and not-for-profits are faced with many challenges that are significantly different than those of other sectors. They often rely on outside funding from governmental agencies and private donors. As a result, they are subject to levels of scrutiny that go far beyond that of other organizations. Because money is usually tight, employees are frequently paid less than their counterparts so creating an environment that supports retention is critically important. As well, the issue of sustainable decision-making is more pressing. Given these unique dynamics, this survey focuses on vocational aspects of work such as a strong sense of identity and purpose that indicate people are experiencing meaning from being with the organization. It also explores consultation practices, sustainability and the extent that people believe that leaders are authentic.

This survey is useful because philanthropic organizations and other not-for-profits rely so heavily on the goodwill of employees and volunteers. It is important to monitor vocational factors in the job experience such as the sense of purpose and identity that is shared and to build practices for sustainment. If a more in-depth view of the culture is desired, consider adding more culture patterns with a Culture Pulse.
